Fake it to make it

fakeit-01.jpgThe game

Fake It To Make It is a social-impact game about fake news. If you need to stop in the middle of your game, it should be okay, as long as you have local storage enabled. (You probably do.) Just come back to this main menu, where you will find your automatically saved games. While this game does work in mobile browsers, you will probably be happier playing on something wider, like a computer or a tablet, instead of a phone.

Fake News

Fake news is a type of yellow journalism or propaganda that consists of deliberate misinformation or hoaxes spread via traditional print and broadcast news media or online social media. This false information is mainly distributed by social media, but is periodically circulated through mainstream media.Fake news is written and published with the intent to mislead in order to damage an agency, entity, or person, and/or gain financially or politically, often using sensationalist, dishonest, or outright fabricated headlines to increase readership, online sharing, and Internet click revenue. In the latter case, it is similar to sensational online "clickbait" headlines and relies on advertising revenue generated from this activity, regardless of the veracity of the published stories. Intentionally misleading and deceptive fake news differs from obvious satire or parody, which is intended to amuse rather than mislead its audience.

I want to know more!

What can I do?

Do your research before sharing! If you see something questionable, look it up! Sometimes, just a quick Google search is enough. Otherwise, I recommend Snopes, Politifact, and FactCheck.org, all of which regularly debunk fake news and other types of misinformation. Consider your sources. If you use Chrome, try the plug-in Fake News Monitor, which will alert you if you are visiting certain sites known to distribute questionable news. It also lists the political leanings of sites. Ask yourself if someone is benefiting by manipulating your emotions. Just like in the game, people may generate views and profits by promoting fear, anger, and other strong emotions that generate shares. If you find an article upseting, that's even more reason to do your research.
